Spring, as Winter melts

Ice Cave | Iceland

Spring, as Winter melts

With the coming of spring, the intensity of the solar light grows ever stonger. Temperatures outside of the cave will rise and direct light hitting the cave gets more intense. It will become so strong that ice caves in Iceland become instable and dangerous. The ice will grow soft because of solar heating and erosion by meltwater. At a certain point the ice cave cannot longer withstand the the weight of its  ceiling and will collapse

This ice cave in the Vatnajökull glacier in Iceland fights for its existence with the incoming sunlight in early March. Meltwater is flowing throughout the cave. It will not be long before the cave will be too dangerous to visit. Next winter, new ice caves will form in the glacier. They will have new shapes and forms and will offer its visitors spectacles of translucent blue colors and glassy reflections. Visiting one of those caves is a fascinating experience.
